How to Add a Faculty Member to a Canvas Course from a Past Term

 It’s definitely possible to add another instructor to a Canvas course that has concluded IF you know this trick:

  1. Go to Settings in the Course Navigation of the past term Canvas course.
  2. In the Course Details tab, change the Participation: dropdown from “Term” to “Course”.
  3. Type tomorrow’s date (or any date in the future) as the End date.
  4. Scroll down and click the “Update Course Details” button on the right.
  5. Go to People in the Course Navigation.
  6. Click on the “+ People” button on the right.
  7. Add the email address of the faculty member you want to add. Choose “Teacher” in the Role dropdown.
  8. Go back to Settings in the Course Navigation.
  9. Change the Participation: dropdown back to “Term”.
  10. Scroll down and click the “Update Course Details” button on the right.
  11. Tah-dah! You did it! Pat yourself on the back.

How to Create Classroom Recordings of Lectures

Pick YuJa or Zoom, whichever video conferencing tool you are more comfortable with using. Both will work.

I pick YuJa!

YuJa Method #1: I want to record my class to YuJa and make it available to my students in Canvas.

  1. Enable YuJa in your Canvas course.
  2. Record class in an YuJa-enabled classroom and save directly to your course channel. 
  3. Tell students to click on YuJa in the course navigation of your Canvas course to watch videos published to the course channel.

YuJa Method #2: I want to edit my YuJa class recording before I make it available to my students in Canvas.

  1. Enable YuJa in your Canvas course.
  2. Record class in an YuJa-enabled classroom. 
  3. Use the Video Editor to make simple edits. (optional)
  4. Publish to your course channel.
  5. Tell students to click on YuJa in the course navigation of your Canvas course to watch videos published to the course channel.

I pick Zoom!

  1. Enable YuJa in your Canvas course.
  2. Create and start a Zoom meeting. (Read this if you’ve enabled Zoom in your Canvas course.)
  3. Record the Zoom meeting to the cloud.
  4. Download the Zoom cloud recording and upload to your YuJa course channel.
  5. Tell students to click on YuJa in the course navigation of your Canvas course to watch videos published to the course channel.

Look no further, friends!

The most up-to-date Fall Academy schedule is always located at go.wlu.edu/fallacademy, but it’s nice to have a print copy, too.

To print the Fall Academy schedule as a foldable booklet:
 
  1. Download the .PDF above.
  2. Open the .PDF in Adobe Acrobat DC.
  3. Choose File > Print and select the desired printer.
  4. Under Pages to Print, select All.
  5. Under Page Sizing & Handling:
    • Select Booklet.
    • Select Both sides for Booklet subset.
    • Select Left for Binding.
    • Select Portrait for Orientation.
  6. Click the Print button. Your screen will look something like this:

How to Wield the Power of Podcasting in Your Classroom!

Podcasting is a fast-growing storytelling medium for sharing information and personal expression. Beyond the convenience of listening on the go, the power of podcasting lies in the words, sounds, and silences in the theater of the mind.

Creating a high-quality podcast requires careful planning, quality scripting, and production skills. Thanks to ITS Academic Technologies, StoryCenter returns to W&L once again to offer a workshop of storytelling in the increasingly popular podcast format. 

Storycenter facilitators will guide you through story development, scripting, interview technique, audio hardware options, and training in Audacity software. All participants will gain hands-on experience and practical knowledge with various facets of creating a podcast and construct a complete, polished podcast segment that integrates consistently with an overall podcast identity. Listen to examples of podcast segments that have come out of Storycenter’s podcast workshops.

This workshop is designed for those who are new to podcasting; eager to learn the basics of long-form, narrative audio storytelling; and interested in using podcasting in the classroom. All W&L faculty are encouraged to apply at go.wlu.edu/podcasting. 

WORKSHOP FORMAT: 

  1. All participants meet in-person with Academic Technologies (but virtually with StoryCenter staff) for a 2-hour introduction session during Winter Academy: Wednesday, December 15 at 9:15 am, breakfast provided.

  2. During Winter Break, each participant conducts an interview (45–60 minutes in length) on their own to use in their podcast segment during Winter Break.

  3.  In January or February 2022, each participant meets on-on-one via Zoom with a StoryCenter facilitator to review their interview and discuss a possible segment to build on based on that interview. 

  4.  All participants meet in-person for three days during Feb Break: Monday, February 21 through Wednesday, February 23, 2022; lunch and snacks provided.

New! Self-paced Canvas Instructor Training!

Truth? Brandon and I love teaching about Canvas.

We really enjoy having a computer lab chock full of professors eager to absorb all they can about the University’s learning management system and we also dig Zoom meetings with those needing a refresher about how to build a peer review assignment or use Speedgrader to grade assignments. 

We also understand that it’s difficult to commit to hour-long training, especially as the start of term creeps closer and closer.

As such, we’ve put together a totally asynchronous, self-paced Canvas tutorial consisting of short videos and links to the Canvas Instructor Guides that contains all you need to navigate Canvas, create assignments and assessments, build a course, grade, and give feedback.

Technology and Tacos: Spotlight on the Pedagogy of Podcasting

Technology & Tacos - A Lunchtime Workshop Series

Our Pedagogy and Pizza lunchtime workshop series is back, and it has a new name!

During the Fall term, we’ll meet on three occasions — Tuesday, September 21; Tuesday, October 5; Tuesday, November 9 — in the Harte Center Teaching Hub (Leyburn 119) to explore and learn about the why and how of podcasting.

  • Technology and Tacos #1: Incorporating Podcasting into Your Teaching Practice
    Educational podcasting has become increasingly popular among educators worldwide. Podcasting can be implemented in a variety of ways: from short, single-concept lectures or audio feedback to students to syntheses of course material through to student-generated content.In this session, hear directly from three W&L faculty members, Mikki Brock, Caleb Dance, and Michael Hill, about why they’ve incorporated podcasting into their classrooms and how it’s worked for them.
  • Technology and Thai #2: Teaching Students Interviewing Skills
    The interview is a staple of both podcasting and journalism, but many students are unfamiliar with how to effectively plan, conduct, and edit interviews.In this session, Mark Coddington, Associate Professor of Journalism and Mass Communications, will go over the basics of what students need to know about interviewing, then have workshop participants pair up to briefly interview each another and debrief afterwards. 

  • Technology and Turkey #3: The Nuts and Bolts of Podcasting
    Get a step-by-step breakdown of the entire process, including technology that’s available for check out, recommended recording/editing software, a quick tour of spaces in the Harte Center that are ideal for student work/collaboration, and how Academic Technologies can support podcasting project assignments, to ensure that students have the skills and background knowledge to create a podcast.

Fall Academy is two fabulous weeks — Monday, August 23 through Friday, September 3 — of technology instruction, pedagogy discussions, guest speakers, hands-on workshops, panels, and other information sessions for new and returning faculty and staff, offered in coordination with the Harte Center, University Registrar, Dean of the College, Office of the Provost, and other offices. 

NOTE: If you’re interested in any breakfast or lunch sessions, registration will close 5 business days prior to the session in order to give Dining Services an accurate headcount. Kindly register as soon as you know you are able to attend.

Meet ProtoMAX, the latest addition to the IQ Center!

The laser cutter in the IQ Center has the capability to cut materials like plastic and thin wood, but we haven’t had the ability to create parts from more durable materials, such as metal … until now!

The addition of a new water jet cutter makes it possible to cut intricate parts from a variety of materials not previously possible.

The process is similar to that of the laser cutter. Parts are created in either CAD or vector drawing software like Illustrator. Those drawings are converted into paths that the high pressure water jet follows to cut your part.

The fine abrasives used in the process make a smooth, almost polished edge on the parts.
